I make to find new ways of making.
Yuki Kawae’s inspiration comes from two places. First, the countryside of Kyoto, Japan where he grew up surrounded by nature, and second, the land of America where he learned and lived the meaning of the term “Rugged Individualism”. Throughout his studies in painting and anthropology at the State University of New York at Geneseo and interior architecture in the graduate program at the Rhode Island School of Design, he kept the chainsaw close in hand and at the same time believed in the subtlety of design. He now lives and works in Cambridge, Massachusetts where wood as a resource is abundantly available. His day job is working for an architecture firm as a full time designer and at night he works for himself.
